Temeriak Falls
Temeriak Falls are a series of 3 waterfalls 1st documented by Jan Stuivenberg back in 2017. Back then information about stream names were not easily available and the 1st waterfall of the series was given the name Lata Guan. Many years later the waterfall gained significant interest when there were attempts to develop the place as a hiking attraction that included a hike to a nearby Gng Halia Karak hill along with a small cafe. Unfortunately where were complications with the forestry department and it has since been left abandoned. There are 2 tall waterfall levels with shallow soaking pools while the rest of the falls upriver are lower in height. This waterfall is NOT suitable for beginners to attempt without guidance due to the vague unmarked trails.
Foreword : There are 3 different known entry trail to Temeriak Falls. Back in 2016, Jan has used a trail from a taoist temple to access the river. It is not clear if this entry trail is overgrown and still possible to access. When Gng Halia Karak gained popularity, visitors begin to use the trail from Karak Chung Wah Chinese Graveyard. It was quite a clear double track trail till the closure of the Gng Halia Cafe after the pandemic where sections of the trail is now overgrown due to having few visitors. It is still possible to use this trail but be aware that the trail condition may be vague & overgrown. Finally there is a 3rd access from a plantation / durian orchard road directly connected to the Jln Lama Bentong - Karak. This is the most straightforward trail and will be the only trail described in this page. Head to Karak town as the nearest landmark. The access road is on the Bentong - Karak road route heading towards Bentong's direction. Visitors can use this Google Map link for directions. There is a dual track gravel road here (Image 1.) that visitors can drive in. Inside there is a wide clearing where visitors can park. Sedan cars are NOT advised to proceed further as deeper inside the loose gravel road coupled with a rather steep elevation will be too much to handle. Proceed by foot from here on out. Follow the main gravel road towards the jungle where visitors will pass several plots of durian orchards. After scaling up a steep slope, visitors will come up to a T-junction. Take a left here before taking a right at the next junction just a short distance away.(Image 2.) Continue following the main gravel trail where visitors will finally arrive at the abandoned Gng Halia Cafe. Some wooden benches and tables constructed by the owner prior provides a good reststop under the shade. From the cafe, proceed straight towards the river between overgrown weeds where the trail leads to a river side trail. Follow this river side trail and visitors will reach the Temeriak Falls 1. (main photo) To proceed to the next waterfall upriver, visitors will have to scramble up the bushy slope. Bushwhacking may be required due to the trail being overgrown. There are trails on both sides of the river but the old trail may not be obvious from the viewpoint of the river. Pass a few moderately sized cascades and visitors will reach the Temeriak Falls 2. (Image 3.) Use the same entry trail to return.
