Lata Harimau / Rimau
Lata Harimau / Rimau is a spectacular multi-level cascade fall series with a strong mist spray at the main fall (image below). The name "Harimau" translates to Tiger and according to local folklore the waterfall got its name when a tiger was once witnessed to have slipped and fell from the waterfall! There are 5 waterfalls documented with some smaller sub-falls and cascades in-between. Mid sized pools are found at the upper falls which require extra effort to reach. It is NOT suitable for beginners to attempt without guidance due to the risk of getting lost within the often confusing junctions of the oil palm estate and the unmarked jungle trails.
Head to Slim Village Police Station as the landmark. Ulu Slim region can be reached from the north via Slim River town or from the south via Behrang Ulu. Near the police station, there is a T-junction.(Image 1) Take the junction heading in to Kolam Air Panas Ulu Slim. Keep to the main road and proceed straight after passing the hot springs till arriving at the next T-junction.(Image 2) This junction will cross a concrete bridge where an aboriginal village Kg Orang Asli Gesau is located on the left at the next junction. On the right at the outskirts of the village is a palm oil estate with an open field. Visitors are advised to park outside the village by the road shoulder or at the open field clearing near the entrance of the village. Park without obstructing passing vehicles. Proceed by foot from here on out.
The route will eventually come quite close to the river (located on the right) but the exit turn off junction to the waterfall is not obvious. Keep a look out for a small trail (Image 4.) that will lead to the waterfall where the Lata Harimau Fall 1 is found.
There are more waterfalls beyond this level but the trail to reach them will be more challenging and vague than before. There will also be river trekking involved to cross a small tributary stream. Only visitors who are experienced in wild jungle trekking should attempt this. Some of the documented falls are shown below with their respective positions.
Exploration Notes : Further exploration upriver have been attempted but the jungle is very dense and covered with vines at both sides of the river. Without extensive effort and chopping, it would not be possible to go above Harimau Fall 5.
