Introduction
Selangor state offers numerous water based sites for people who prefer to spend their
weekends. Cool river water surrounded by jungle greenery.
The largest and very popular picnic area occurs in the 5-kilometers stretch of the Pertak
River that runs almost parallel to the road leading from KKB to Frasers Hill.
Here you and your family can enjoy the cool, clear water and the tree
on the riverbanks provide cool shades complete the ambience for your
day’s outing. |
|

| It is not sure how long these beautiful picnic spots will be available.
There is work in progress to build a new dam and, as you are reading, the place may be flooded already. |
For the more adventurous, they would prefer less crowded areas and an
opportunity to see nature at its pristine stage. There are uncounted
spots, confluence of the Pertak and the Chiling rivers is one such
place. Here, there are some fairly large rapids made by the fast
flowing waters. Then there are others even more adventurous to leave
the well trodden paths to seek that hidden waterfall. Until now, not
many people are aware that the upstream areas of the Chiling tributary
offer more! |
Chiling Falls A waterfall not to be missed (but only for those familiar with outdoor activities)
There is
a legendary waterfall that is rumoured to be very beautiful. It is a
well kept secret - the area needs protection. Then as it is not
developed, reaching the waterfall itself and playing around it, is
treacherous. No safety measures are installed for those not familiar
with outdoor life! Also remember that having large crowd is not an
assurance but false sense of security. |
You want to know its whereabouts?
After crossing the steel bridge {on the way to Frasers Hill} you can park you car at the left. The trail starts another 100 meters up, take the small turning on the right. You can also cross the road from the parking place and scramble down to the river below. There is a signboard to inform hikers that camping is prohibited.
If you decide to camp along the river, please be warned. This stretch of river
from the road in to the park area had taken many lives. The open area
looks tame, sudden flash flood submerges most dry ground ! |
|

| Follow the clear trail and be prepared that you will have to cross the river several times!
Not all crossings are in the open air, a few have the river water weaving in between
boulders. Current is swift as the river is going through rapids. Water
level here varies from 0.5 - 1 meter deep. This is a trek of about 2-3
kilometer and it will takes about 1 hour 30 minutes with thigh deep water at some of the
crossings. |
|

| At the end of this exciting trek, a truly magnificent sight
awaits you. There in front of you, is this monstrous fall, a great
sight to behold. The vertical fall of the water has over the years
carved great cervices on the rocks. Beware of the wet rocky walls by
the fall. The fall of water is so forceful that its sprays cover the
whole vicinity, giving it a misty ethereal atmosphere. The waterfall
is about 50 meters tall. What is frightening, this volume of water
drops within a deep crevices carved out from the cliff surfaces. A
giant water sprout with plenty of "smoke". At the base rocks break up
the falling wall of water before it enters into a 50 meters wide pool
of varying depth. |
|

|
| If you still have the energy and are curious enough,
follow a trail up the steep bank to the right of the fall.
You will pass another waterfall (not accessible) before you reach the third waterfall.
This place is better suited as picnic than that at the 1st Waterfall.
Do bring your camera along to record your memorable trip to these remote falls! |

My goodness!! My last visit to Chilling was about more than a year ago.. read from those recent comments that the water is no longer clear? I can still remember my 1st trip to chilling.. clear water, cooling, birds like whispering in my ears, and starring at the starry sky counting the shooting stars... I wonder if i could experience this again? But.. camping and making fire no longer allowed... that is a sad news for me.. I fall in love with camping because of chilling...
| | ahmoimoi | 6---0-2008 |
back from sg chilling and i must admit that it was never the same cos all i see was murky water-fishes not visible anymore.one good thing though, river crossing board were put up for easy direction but would be much appreciated if the same applies when we wanna trek out of the waterfall.
| | meng | 6---0-2008 |
What ?? Logging activities around that area. As i know and notice there is protected forest...i think the "Authorities" who incharge had voice out the illegle logging subject to try take action, but the Higher-Authorities dont think that neccessary.... but only untill the "Last Tree" cutting down & the river become a Drain... and the day will come sure enough, should we just stay and wacth...

going to chilling this thursday.one of my fav waterfalls.btw, anyone here khows of a waterfall in gunung hitam, which is located in ulu langat, somewhere near gabai?actually anyone been there b4 and mind sharing?

Visited May 2008. The water is no longer clear, with silt kicking up and there were no fish nibbling at your feet for sure. Still an awesome sight nevertheless, upper fall is definitely worth the visit and much better spot to spend the day just chilling out/swim. River crossing very easy, the trek was not hard at all. Satelite photos of the area show mass logging activities. Something oughta be done before we lose spots like this in Malaysia.
| | pm2 | 4---0-2008 |
Yes. I went there yesterday 26th April 2008, and was a bit disappointed, last time I went there the water was clear and you can see lot of fishes.
But yesterday, it was cloudy, and I can hardely see any fish. Also, sand was every where and spoilt the view a bit.
I am not sure why, but if it iss because of erosion due to logging, then the authorities must do something before we lost another nature gem in malaysia.

Went to Chiling waterfall on the 12/04. The pool was heavily silted, one can only swim near the end of the fall but the turbulence is kicking up sand and gravel. My hair, pants and even underwear is full of sand. The ranger told me that there are logging activities going on uphill that caused soil erosion. I hope something can be done to preserve the waterfall.

I am sure u can do it on yr own if u are an adventurous person and enjoys taking risks. But for first timers, those with less intrepid spirit and tourists who has no idea of the place, a guide is essential. We would not want to have articles like Tourist swept by the river due to strong current and drowned or People lost in Chiling Falls in the papers. It is fine if everything goes well, but we always must think of what if (in case of emergencies)? There are certain times of the year due to weather conditions when the river crossings become very dangerous even to the point the guide will cancel the trip. A qualified/licenced guide will have the judgement & know-how to make the right decision as not to endanger the lives of tourists.
I hired Mr Yen the first time I went in. He is very competent. Plus, without a guide I wouldn not have learned so much about plants, forest ecology & true religion. I was also mesmerized the first time I saw the Fall & pool beneath it. I remember not wanting to go home after that & I jokingly asked the rangers if I can build a hut there but they said no...aiyah what a waste. I still go for a trek in Chiling whenever I am free.
So, if u are confident to do it on your own, go for it but never go in alone in case anything happens to you, at least there is somebody there to help instantly. But if u have doubts & not comfortable to be on yr own in the jungle, I highly recommend Mr Yen. And I think the price is reasonable If RM180 (I think that is the price now) for 9 to 10 hours of service & physical labour is considered expensive, I do not know what else to tell you? If u really do the calculations, the money a guide is getting is less than a person with a desk job in an air-con room after minus transport cost & food. A guide has to eat too. To my knowledge, they don not even have Socso & EPF. I do not know why anybody would want to be a nature guide. The only thing I can think of is the love & passion for nature & life. I think for these kind of people, being one with nature is already a reward nevermind money... this is only my humble opinion.
Let us be reasonable, people.

I went to the waterfalls with two mates in late Nov 07 and it was a great experience. Such a huge change from the hustle and bustle of the city. The trek was fantastic and the river crossings were challenging. Seeing the waterfall at the end of the trek was well worth it. This trek is highly recommended for those looking for a change from the bland greys of the urban jungles of Malaysia. It definitely was the highlight of our trip to Malaysia.

ChiLLing Waterfall was definitely a great trip with great experience. From Jungle tracking, to climbing, to crossing rivers, etc. It was definitely a great journey..Even better when we have Yen to help us out. Yen is a tour guide, whom has extensive knowledge about nature. He has taught and shown us many thing which we have never seen in our life. Before the waterfall, Yen brought us to the Selangor Damp!! the scenary was amazing..speechless.!!! The waTerfall was definitely amazing.I could call it "HEAVEN". After the Waterfall Yen brought us to the HotSPring..he taught us how to use our mind to control things..how to put our feet in a 44 degrees hot water, then our whole body..it was indeed a great experienced..Last but not least, Yen brought us to fill our stomach with seafood. The food was delicious!! So guys, check out Chilling waterfall. Contact Yen if you need help.
| | Tilo | 1---0-2008 |
I can really recommend taking the tour with Yen. He is a really good guide and explains a lot along the jungle trek to the fall, but he also shares interesting things about the different religions (the tour also includes a visit a buddhist temple) and mental issues (challenge to keep your legs in a hot spring). At the end, we had some excellent seafood. His number is down here in the commands. Call him if you wanna have a really good day. Oh, the Chiling Fall is beautiful.

Hi! I was there recently with 5 foreign guest and it took us 2 hours ( due to high water level and for safety reasons we had to use ropes to cross the rivers) to reach the waterfall. I am a qualified nature guide approved by TDC to provide an educational and also a safe eco-tour. Call 017-3697831 or email me at happyyen@gmail.com. Thank you.

Went to Chiling fall in September. Man, what a good place, you\'ll get addicted. The air is fresh, clear water, not polluted environment. You don\'t need to have much experience in jungle trekking to complete the walk, but go with a guide is recommended for first timer. I went there with KL Yen (mobile: +60173697831), friendly and knowledgeable guide, even brought us to a place with tasty food. I\'ll be going to Lebok waterfall with him again in Dec.

Just visited the Falls for the first time during the weekend of Sept 8, 2007. It was an easy trek of one hour and fifteen minutes but not for children below 12. Would be necessary to hire a guide for first timers as the river crossings can be a little tricky.
At the end of the trek, the sight of the falls is really worth the trip. The place is beautiful, serene and clean. Except for an occasional plastic wrapper, it is relatively free from the rubbish which you will find in the easily assessed waterfalls.
What's special about this place is that you are able to swim in a refreshingly cold pool with hundreds of fishes swarming around you. (No worries they don't bite)
For those who are planning a trip, please respect the environment and bring back everything that you have taken with you. There is a large garbage bin at the parking area after the steel bridge for you to deposit your rubbish.
Do enjoy your visit.

Hi all,
Just for the info, started 2 months ago no campings activity allowed beyond the cable bridge. But there are a few good spot for camp at the Fishery Dept. Chalet (so called). Anyway... that's was a good step to preserve the untouched nature. But don't do it Half Way (Hangat2 Tahi Ayam...) Ok.. Cheers...
| | Alan | 8---0-2007 |
Dear Jan, went to Chiling again on 5/8/07. Can u tell me how to put some pictures into the achives ? TQ
| | Shahrul Tami | 8---0-2007 |
It's easy to go to the start point. Just go to KKB then follow route to Fraser Hill. The last time I went there (about in June 07), you'll find lots of Kelah fish on the way to the waterfall. It quite easy to go there, just follow the route. You'll find Fisheries Dept Signboard along the way and that confirm that you're in the right track.

At the 1st crossing, there is now a toilet, shelter, pedestrian bridge and u can camp here. After crossing the bridge, its everything no no. No fishing, camping, chopping wood for fire, littering. Don't think u can get away with it because there is rangers around with camera. Chilling must be protected cause its still prestine, fabulous.Visit Chilling if u r a diehard nature person. Take out your rubbish or don,t come at all. For more info, pls e-mail me at campmanalan@yahoo.com

I love Sg Chiling! It was a clear day and prior to the outing, there was no heavy downpour. The hiking wasn't tough at all as the place was relatively quite flat. The initial part of the trail was surrounded by a wall of ferns on both sides (nice!). We enjoyed the river crossings very much but a word of caution for those bringing very young children. In some parts, the river current can be strong or the water level is about 3 feet high. It would be helpful to bring along a rope (not raffia string!) for crossing. We also got to feed the fish using the fish pellets provided by the staff of the Fisheries Department (if they are around). After about an hour's hike, we finally reached the waterfall and it was a joyful sight to behold. Lovely place and I am looking forward to going back there again.

Hi there, I just met a guide in an outdoor adventure shop and after talking to him and seeing some photos I am going to get a group of friends together and book him up as a guide for this 'Chiling waterfall'. I think it would be worth it from a safety and knowledge point of view, he was also very genuine and a really nice guy.His name on his card is KL Yen tel +60173697831, e-mail happyyen@gmail.com. Lucy

me, mygf n 7 of our fren just went there on 17-19th Feb. unfortunately is raining heavily that 2 days. we have to wait nearly 2 hours to cross the 2nd river crossing which the water is about 1.20 meter high, with pretty strong current. Went up at 1pm reach the campsite at nearly 7pm. We only able to go to the waterfall on the 3rd day bcoz of the rain, but pheww... it is all worthwhile, the waterfall is spectacular. ps: 20m rope n clear weather would b usefull.

My friends & I are interested in making a trip to the Chilling Waterfall. Some people told us we need a guide but we find some of the rates a bit too expensive. We recently had a bad experience with some guide who charged us for nothing (we could have easily found our way in & out without him)! But from some of the comments here, it seems that we don\'t really need a guide but then this may only be applicable to the seasoned trekkers. I wonder if anyone out there who could dispense some good advice to us. Of course, if we can save the guide fee, that would be great but if you think we really need one for our safety, let us know and perhaps, recommend us a decent guide. I am contactable at 016-3166360. Thanks! :-)

Chilling Falls was a very unique and exciting waterfall and the whole 1 hour walk crossing the same river 5 times was a worthy one. I'll definitely will come again!!! Highly recommended!
| | Jessie | 0---1-2006 |
Made the trip with my family on 1st day of Raya. The river crossing was hard as the current was swift and there were plenty of small rocks. We were lucky because we met 2 groups of guys, one of whom had a rope. The rope helped a whole lot. If you dont have a rope, then form a human chain.
The trails are clear but there are plenty of them. Just stay as close to the river as possible. Just before reaching the waterfall, there is a small "cave" formed by two huge rocks. Thats quite an experience to pass it. Have some bats nesting there too.
The waterfall is beautiful!. Worth every effort to go. We didnt stay very long though as the skies was getting dark. Would definetly go again during the dry season.
Lastly, this is a GREAT informative site. Keep up the good work!.
| | William | 8---0-2006 |
Has been there many times but be very careful of sudden flash flood. Always on the look out for dark clouds upstream as it may be raining a couple Km away but surely the waterfall will be very strong and bring flashflood. Be sure to look out for unusual sight on the water like foam and slight muddiness in the water. If you ever see this occurs, please move to higher ground immediately and away from this fall.

First went there way back in 1993.. fell in love with it eversince.. the trainers in Pusat Latihan KKB called it Johnny Walker Waterfall (Dunno for what reason..!?!).. The last time i went there was in 2002.. still one of the best waterfall I've been..

went to chiling few years. what a wonderful place to relax n enjoy the view. i would never the site as i was drown at the 1st pool up the hill. but

These falls are definitely worth a visit. The track is clear and a nice gentle stroll with some fun river crossings. The pool below the bottom fall provides a welcome dip.
The track to the upper falls runs off to the right of the river just before the falls. The trail follows the ridge up past the top of the bottom fall, a lovely view down and on to the upper falls. Well worth the climb which is not too taxing.
Try coming down the river from the bottom of the falls with the current, a sort of mini-canyoning. It does get a bit bumpy as the water gets shallower when the river widens out; fun non the less!
An excellent site and I'll definitely try more falls as time permits.

went to Chilling today..lovely place, no doubt!!!..thanks to the info here..
but unfortunately...irresponsible visitors leave their rubbish behind! plastic bottles...tin cans...plastic bags....ciggarette boxes n butts..
PLEASE!!!!...wisen up n bring your trash back :)...
and we did just that :)..hauled it back across the 5 crossings...relatively easy...and..satisfying that we even helped pick up some rubbish of the other visitors all in the name of preserving chillings beauty :)...
will be going again soon! :)..

I last visited the waterfalls back in 1996. Brought my cousin and fellow kampung frens in a Perodua Rusa up to a clearing right before 1st river crossing. Those days, 4WD could reached almost to the campsite while normal car could reach the clearing before 1st river crossing.
Last 2 months, decided to gather some fellow 4WD owners to the waterfalls. I was shocked that the trail is no longer there. Only hiker's trail left. Even the 1st clearing was not accessible by car anymore. Dunno what the waterfalls and campsite area look like anymore.

Chiling is indeed a good place to build up the love for nature. Short trek along the river and found your reward waiting! Relatively close to KL, but still amazingly unspoilt. I even saw some people kayak from the bridge down to the dam! Some pictures update here: http://yellow0eye.blogspot.com/2005/12/chiling-waterfalls.html Cheers!
| | chew123 | 1---1-2005 |
Flash flood is a tame definition. Torrent is the more appropriate word as it will come all of a sudden. Some years ago, a few campers in a group got sweeped away from their riverbank campsite by the sudden torrent and drowned in their sleep. Be mindful that sometimes heavy torrent give you very time to run to safety in Sungai Chiling area.
| | chew123 | 1---1-2005 |
The picnic area mentioned by you is gone for good as the stretch has now been totally submerged by the dam.
Flash flood occurs when it rains upstream, deep in the forest, that is. When stretches of the green mountain views from afar turn pale green, get ready to move out of the river and the river bank as the flash flood may come in seconds without warning to the untrained eyes.
From a hometown boy
| | ATiah | 8---0-2005 |
Flash floods rushing down from the upper reaches of the river can be very dangerous. Visitors and picnikers need to be alert to signs of flash floods especially when it rains in the hilly parts.
